Why is hollywood coming out with horror movies that are extremely twisted and disturbing?

Scary movies seem to have gotten out of hand compared to the clic "scary movies" we all once enjoyed. It is beyond my comprehension to understand the thrill and enjoyment that people get from some of the scary/horror movies these days.
