Is the water near the equator hot enough to scald or kill you?

This is in reference to the recent Air France flight crash. Some debris was found pretty close to the original path near the equator so if they did somehow survive the impact will they be able to remain in the water? Thanks, and hopefully this story will have a somewhat happy ending
